I Saved Myself

Ah, ah, ah, ah- AAH!

Leave at once, you miscreant,
I need not your favor.
This is private property,
what gives you the right?
Look at me, you have to see
I’m gallant and braver.
I don’t need a knight;

I saved myself,
thank you very much.
I’m not a princess who’s senseless
or out of touch.
Take back your hand;
I scale my tower ev‘ryday.
So climb down my trellis,
head for a land far, far away.

And don’t let the drawbridge hit you on the way out!

I am not a heretic,
I just don’t like dresses.
I’m the kind of princess
who prefers to wear pants.
Longer hair invites the knights
to climb up my tresses.
Ugh, such sycophants.

I’m no one’s quest
in a belvedere.
I crave adventure,
indenture is what I fear.
That’s why I fled
the castle’s cold, controlling claws.
Here I have power,
there I was only shown my flaws.

Drowned in the tears I cried.
Crowned the “presumptive” heir.
I found freedom in the forest here,
where there’s no clownish king,
I’m free to write,
I’m free to sing!

Ah, ah, ah

I saved myself
from a life of dress.
I’m not a damsel,
I am seldom in distress.
Let beauty sleep;
she abdicates the throne she hates.

You can’t entice me back with diadems and precious gems;
The royal life is dry as chablis.
I choose a life of non-conformity.
Go save yourself, ‘cause I’m already free.
